DeMatteis, Joe Abra 17x26, B, col. Almeno in parte.

Of the two films, Caligari is the better because it is both more truthful the debate about the framing devices of the film notwithstanding and more fearful. Its cocktail of influences resulted in a world far less fragile, if less imaginative, and a world that could be returned to time and time again, as Universal did throughout the thirties and forties.

Where Caligari represents a style and a vision, Frankenstein represents a formula and the beginnings of a genre. On a set representing a hall in a medieval castle, a large bat flies in, circles round and is transformed info Mephistopheles. Conjuring up a cauldron, Mephistopheles produces from it a pretty girl, followed by a stream of phantoms, skeletons and witches until one brandishes a crucifix and the demon vanishes in a puff of smoke.

The Devil also appears as a bat, rather more vampirically erotic in intent if not in deed, in Le Diable au Couvent But although the work of M61ies teems with demons, monsters, apparitions and bizarre mutilations, on very rare occasions gruesome in effect - like the giant of the snows when it crushes a hapless explorer in A la Conquite du Pole - he was too steeped in the pantomime tradition of amusing fantasy to figure in the history of horror.

In the flickerings that resulted from the combination of the trickeries of science and magic, the emotions engendered by horror had little place. It was only as films grew longer and audiences more sophisticated that the horror film took its rightful place in the cinematic spectrum. A legend holds that anyone seeing the ghost of a woman in grey - instead of a hound - will die soon afterwards. By all accounts this was a fast-paced adventure story, full of secret rooms and passageways and the spectral appearances were the highlight of the movie.

Larsen left the series after this episode and was replaced first by Otto Lagoni, then by Alwin Neuss and finally by Holger Rasmussen. The next major Holmes movie was part of the German series which began with Der Hund von Baskerville in , in which Neuss continued in the role he had played briefly in Denmark. European Nightmares and American Daydreams The twenties saw a marked contrast between European and American approaches to horror.

Thus for instance, in comparison to both earlier and later American versions of the Frankenstein story in , and which exploited the spectacular possibilities of the novel in a theatrical way, F. In a similar fashion, Paul Wegener brought to life the legend of the golem Der Golem, , making use of lighting and design to produce a sense of claustrophobic atmosphere in advance of anything being attempted in America, and in Korkarlen , Victor Sjostrom - mining similar territory to D. Griffith - showed himself in advance of Griffith in his handling of a complex narrative. Equally noticeable was the theatricality of American acting in the first half of the decade.

Oddly enough, however, it was two European emigres, Benjamin Christensen with the magnificent Seven Footprints to Satan, and Paul Leni with The Cat and the Canary and The Man Who Laughs, who showed themselves to be the masters of the slight horrors that the American cinema specialized in. Their going to Hollywood anticipated the stream of emigres of the thirties. But, by then, following the advent of sound, Hollywood notions of film-making and American films were dominant the world over and it was American attitudes to horror that the rest of the world imitated.

Even as Jekyll he is too much given to theatrical posing, and despite excellent camerawork from Struss, the film really comes alive only in isolated moments. A monstrous spider scuttles across the floor, climbs up on the bed, and settles smotheringly on top of him.

This naive yet extraordinarily effective piece of symbolism is somehow made all the more powerful by the fact that whether intentionally or simply because the man in the spider suit is clearly visible throughout the spider has distinctly human features. An exquisite visual styhst who worked in America from until when he was fired from The Mysterious Island , Tourneur was probably at his best with the light fantasy of The Blue Bird , or the picturesque adventure of The Last of the Mohicans Talmadge, stunt double for Douglas Fairbanks and Harold Lloyd, among others, plays a Fairbanksian role as a young man disheartened by his failure to make a fortune in six months as he had promised his sweetheart Dove.

Fittingly, Talmadge later became a stunt director. Orlac Veidt is given a hand transplant allowing him to play again, but it emerges that the new pair belonged to a murderer and Veidt finds that they have a will of their own. In , E. As an encouragement, the uncle obligingly has some securities hidden in the house. But instead of finding them, Agnew finds the strangled corpse of his cousin Miljan , also in love and also searching. Agnew eventually solves the mystery, and the villainous caretaker who stole the bonds von Seyffertitz is killed by the ape he trained to kill on command but which rebels. Even Rin-Tin-Tin followed an unlikely suit.

Here the wonder dog is owned by a notorious Limehouse criminal known as the London Letter who maltreats him while using him as a lookout. The British release version was heavily cut and cleaned up to turn it into a standard Rin-Tin- Tin adventure. The opening, as a hand lovingly brushes away the cobwebs to reveal the credits, is magnificent. In an old dark house with spiky battlements perched gothically on a hilltop, old Cyrus West cringes in an armchair, menaced by shadows that become huge medicine bottles with monstrous cats his relatives snarling, spitting and weaving between them.

Based on a play by John Willard first performed in , The Cat and the Canary was remade three times: twice under the same title , and once as The Cat Creeps Hill, Alfred A. Falling under suspicion when her father becomes the latest victim. The sudden unannounced arrival of two bizarre individuals Murray and Kelsey , who mm out to be detectives, does nothing to lessen the nocturnal alarms of strange noises and mysterious disappearances that culminate in the capture of a sailor who confesses to having impersonated the marauding gorilla.

But Glass, finally revealing that he too is a detective, unmasks Pidgeon as the real gorilla-suited killer. The film was remade twice, in and , both times under the same title. But the overall effect was still stiff, stagy and more than a little ludicrous. Blindly obsessed by a thirst for revenge, he takes the child to Africa and secures his position as a trader by becoming the terror of the natives as a sort of voodoo witch-doctor playing on their superstition through his magic and even having an assistant pose as a monster.

Despite the highly artificial evocation of Africa, Browning builds an atmospheric dark, cramped tension centred around the image of the paralysed Chaney dragging himself serpentlike across the floor. Contrivance creeps in when Barrymore turns up again to find the now grown-up daughter Nolan a prostitute in the brothel where she has been lodged. Chaney is finally persuaded that Nolan is indeed his daughter just as an even better revenge presents itself if Barrymore is killed, according to native belief the daughter must also die , and has to make a last-minute sacrifice of his own life.

Arbitrary melodrama, perhaps, but neatly prepared for by the illusion which opens the film - a stage act in which a skeleton in a coffin transformed into a beautiful woman - and which Chaney uses again at the end, after recovering his illusions, in order to save his daughter. A group of characters arrive for assorted reasons at a deserted wharf in San Francisco. It is LonChaney right as midnight, a strange drumming noise can be heard from a Dead Legs in the ghostly-looking yacht moored there, and an old watchman melodramatic West of urges them not to go aboard, muttering dire warnings about Zanzibar.

The latter is revealed as a madman who believes he has reason to kill each of his guests and who is killed Johnson whom he brutalizes, but leaves a bomb set to explode in five minutes, which Loder manages to find and throw overboard. American actor and entrepreneur Blackwell plays Holmes as a macho adventurer, the style he had adopted for Bulldog Drummond a few years earlier, and Seroffs Watson is a younger sidekick than the image provided later by Nigel Bruce.

Indeed, he was so well known for his marvellous villains that a contemporary audience would have had little difficulty in guessing who was behind the nefarious doings on the moors. Arriving in New York from Budapest and making the big time, Veidt falls for the pretty assistant Julie Philbin who joins the act, and though she is 20 years his junior, arranges a reception at which he means to announce their engagement. Consumed with rage, Veidt plans to kill Mackaye during the act while performing a sword trick.

But Fenton is the one stabbed to death, Mackaye is arrested for his murder, and Veidt confesses before theatrically stabbing himself. A companion piece to The Cat and the Canary , its spoof horrors are set this time in a theatre - actually the replica of the Paris Opera built for The Phantom of the Opera and pressed into service again - which has been dark for five years since the leading man was murdered during a performance and his body disappeared.

The playwright Love decides to try again with the same play and most of the original cast but rehearsals are disturbed by strange noises, falling scenery and treacherous trapdoors. The plot gets sillier and sillier as a mysterious-phantom prowls only supposedly a ghost , issues an unheeded last warning that the theatre must not reopen, and presides over an opening night when the stage goes dark and the new leading man disappears at precisely the same point in the play.

Best of all is the opening sequence, a brilliant impressionistic montage of Broadway nightlife with the facade of the theatre becoming a demoniacally grinning mask. The film was remade as House of Fear Cohn, Robert F. Sound makes two notable differences. It proves conclusively that he could have made the transition to sound with ease - did, in fact - since his delivery of lines, not to mention his vocal mimicry as the old woman, is superb. At all events, the first 20 minutes - predominantly in the remake ofThe silent, with the arrival of Renfield and the drive to Castle Unholy Three.

Dracula with a bat leading the way - are astonishingly fluid and brilliantly shot by Freund despite the painted backdrops. Intriguingly, the cast originally lined up for the first sound version featured Bela Lugosi, Leslie Howard and Bette Davis. The look of the film is as unique as its narrative structure. Instead of heavily contrasted chiaroscuro, the images are hazy, dissolving into shades of grey. Mate and Dreyer hit on the visual style by accident: some rushes were produced with the fault because of a false Ught in the lens, and they decided to reproduce the effect throughout.

The contribution of the celebrated designer Hermann Warm was minimal, although some of the compositions are reminiscent of the way Murnau used Ught in Nosferatu , also designed by Warm. The whole film was shot on location in the summer of Dreyer did not make another movie for 12 years, when he returned to the theme of the cruel terror exercised by unconscious forces when they are given legitimacy by institutionalized reUgions with Vredens Dag Baclanova, a trapeze artist, marries a dwarf Earles for his money, planning to poison him with the aid of her strongman lover Victor.

If the last scenes are horrific enough to satisfy the most ghouUsh tastes, the revelation of the film is its warmth and humanity. Browning manages to evoke the closed world of freaks, the intensely human emotions contained within inhuman exteriors, in such a way that fascinated revulsion turns into tender comprehension.

His first introduction to the freaks comes as a local squire walks through a forest, his gamekeeper babbles wildly about having seen grotesque creatures in the wood, and the camera focuses on a clearing in which things crawl, dance and hop obscenely. The squire angrily protests, and Madame Petralini Dione , the motherly body in charge of the freaks, explains that they are merely playing in the sun on a day off from the circus.

An instinctive huddling of the terrified freaks against Dione, a gesture from a pin-headed woman who lovingly touches her face, and the scene suddenly turns from a Walpurgisnacht revel into a charming idyU. Frozo the clown Ford and his girl Venus Hyams , who take the freaks as they are, link these worlds in two wholly charming scenes: teasing one of the pin-headed women about her new dress, and joking with the bearded lady about the birth of her baby.

These scenes, and more particularly the sequence of the wedding banquet, provide an emotional basis for the horror of the climax. But she is still unable to consider the freaks as other than unfeeling monsters, and inflicts the final insult on her tiny husband by carrying him piggyback round the room. After this, and the subsequent slow poisoning of Earles, there is no doubt whose side the audience The macabre finale, lit in chiaroscuro, is even better. As Baclanova and Victor go about their business of poisoning Earles, eyes watch constantly, peering in at windows and from beneath caravans.

The freaks gather their forces. A storm breaks, the rain comes pouring down, knives appear and there is nothing on the soundtrack but the storm, the caravans rolling, a melancholy tune played by a dwarf on a pipe; the steaming rain, the thick mud full of crawling shapes in the darkness, and Baclanova and Victor running screaming in dip Tod Browning s Willis Goldbeck, Leon Gordon, Edgar Allan Woolf, A1 Boasberg c Merritt B. Wells disapproved of it, this is a remarkably fine adaptation of his novel The Island of Doctor Moreau.

All too soon a sinister housekeeper is prowling, a partially paralysed wicked uncle Lewis is plotting the demise of the heiress, and a maddened ape gibbers in the basement. The limp thrills are marginally brightened, no thanks to the script, by a characteristic performance from Best in his debut as the inevitable cowardly black servant.

Ellis went on to script a number of Charlie Chaplin films. Count Zaroff Banks is a connoisseur of arcane pleasures, and the owner of a remote island in the Malay archipelago to which he ensures that passing ships are attracted and then wrecked on the reeds. Only those strong enough to swim ashore and to avoid the sharks will do, since Zaroff is a sportsman and believes in playing the game.

The film is one of the rare examples in the German cinema of well-done black comedy. After further villainies involving his attempts to secure violated Indian temple. Accordingly, he assembles masquerade when he sees in a mirror that Gregor is using his the investment cartel claimants to his fortune for the usual supposedly paralysed arm. But Karloffs performance is to cheat fate. Ponderously directed by Nigh, who was also outstanding throughout, particularly in the subtle mime responsible for a totally unrecognizable remake called The Ape sequence in which the bad twin carefully rehearses his , the film is not aided by distinctly unfunny comic relief transformation into the brother he has killed, from Lowry, a radio star making his only film appearance as a dR wuliamNeill p Robert North s Henry Myers, brash insurance salesman.

The erotic undertones as she asks the girl Grey to lower her shoulder straps for a head-and- shoulders portrait - and almost loses control, whereupon the camera cuts to a grinning mask on the wall - are far more subtly expressive than the explicit lesbian nudges offered in Et Mourir de Plaisir and the films that followed in its wake. Even the flurry of action towards the end - acknowledging the impossibility of cure but in love with Kruger, she tries to force him to go to Transylvania with her by kidnapping his fiancee Churchill - contrives to maintain the mood of bleak and hopeless desperation that only ends when she finally sacrifices herself to save the man she loves from death at hands of the jealous Pichel.

His murders had been committed with bullets of frozen poison. This usual ramshackle Katzman production includes the usual comic relief a blundering photographer played by St John but - oddly - no fog. Even the perambulating mummy turns out to be a fake, and a banal Harry Baur! Lugosi has one nicely diabolic moment when he realizes that his blind- mute messenger Lew Owen is the man who can hear too much, and uses an electrical apparatus to make him deaf as well. Owen eventually goes into the tank like the insurance victims, leaving Walter - his only friend, in a bizarre relationship reminiscent of that between the monster and Ygor in Son of Frankenstein - to go berserk, strangle Lugosi, and hurl his body from the roof.

When she Frank tries to steal the antidote, he performs an operation on her and lets it be known that she died, but buries a wax effigy instead of her body and keeps her in a secret room. The crazed surgeon eventually dies of a heart attack when he sees a cat attacking his wife. Bohr who also edited the picture and wrote the score, creates some memorable images, a testament to his genuine sense of cinema.

Desperately trying to find a cure that will benefit a crippled neighbour Wrixon , he seizes his chance when required to treat an animal-trainer injured in a circus fire. Letting the man die so as to tap his spinal fluid for the serum he is developing, Karloff soon requires further supplies - which he gets by killing and skinning off-screen an ape which escaped in the fire, then dressing up in its pelt and murdering unwary passersby.

He is finally gunned down, of course, but happily the girl is cured by then. Agreeably dotty after a talkative first half but distressingly tacky, it makes peculiarly unconvincing use of some stock circus footage. Even Lewis, to judge by the number of closeups of staring eyes, appears to have given up and gone d Joseph H. Atwill gleefully hams it up as a mad electrobiologist who dreams of creating a race of living zombies. Atwill subjects him to ever-increasing electrical charges until he is both lethal in body and deranged in mind.

The script, obviously derived from The Invisible Ray , is in any case strictly machine-made, generating little suspense as Chaney is repeatedly recharged, stumps murderously around outlined by a neon halo, and is anti- climactically reduced to ashes when the rubber suit he wears as insulation is punctured on a barbed-wire fence. Walking out of a mist to camera, Drew tells the story of her marriage to a nice young man Paige , as a flashback slyly offers a glimpse of the shoulder holster worn by the supposed preacher Calleia.

Meanwhile a young man Terry , framed for murder by the gang he realized was tricking his sister Drew into prostitution, faces execution and hysterically agrees when a Dr Parry Zucco asks to be allowed to use his brain for post-mortem experiment. Such deficiencies are largely corrected by an exceptionally interesting cast.

Perhaps they were simply too delicately evocative for other film-makers to emulate. Cat People is about a young New York fashion designer the marvellously feline Simon who falls in love and marries, but - troubled by a strange encounter which awakens her secret fear that she is descended from a medieval Balkan sect whose women turn into raging felines when their passions are roused - refuses to consummate the marriage. Well understanding the power of suggestion, Lewton insisted on precedence being given to imagined rather than real horrors throughout the series. The sequence is made doubly terrifying by The poster for Cm the complete vulnerability of an unclothed, unarmed People, Jacques swimmer.

The pool of light thrown by each street lamp becomes an island of safety surrounded by menacing blackness. Her hesitant footsteps seem to be echoed by stealthily padding paws and the rustle of stirring branches. Assisted by his servant Urecal and her two monstrous sons a hideous dwarf and a half-witted giant , Lugosi keeps the bridal bodies alive in an underground vault until their glands run out.

Walters is the intrepid girl reporter saved from the operating table by a combined effort from the servant and the police. Apparently unharmed by the bullets which finished him off in Son of Frankenstein , Ygor the shepherd Lugosi retrieves the also unharmed monster from the boiling sulphur pit into which he was hurled at the end of the same film, and takes him off to see Baron Frankenstein Hardwicke , evidently another son of the original creator. Inconsistencies - not the least of which is that the monster, having learned to talk in The Bride of Frankenstein and been mute in Son of Frankenstein, has mysteriously regained his powers of speech - aside, this opening is quite strikingly directed as the faltering monster renews his strength during an electrical storm, with the lightning recharging the electrodes in his neck.

I, Ygor, will live for ever! Kenton p George Waggner s W. Mainly a mystery with the usual sinister suspects, including Lugosi standing rather sadly on the sidelines as the butler, the film, though capably acted and serviceably directed, is routine. In , Bamberg wrote and starred in three pictures simultaneously: a haunted-house thriller called El Espectro de la Novia; a mystery adventure story about an illusionist, El As Negro, and this movie.

La Mujer Sin Cabeza is the best of the three. Bamberg exploits the cinema as a box of magic tricks to enhance his stories with supernatural overtones. His best collaboration with Cardona was El Museo del Crimen , an entertaining detective story in which Fu glimpses, apropos of nothing, the face of a werewolf in a hotel mirror, an incident then forgotten in the rest of the movie, making it simply a playful reference to the American fantasy films they took as their model. The headless ghost makes a somewhat absurd appearance, and several villagers are found decapitated.

In the end, a Nazi, attempting to mask his subversive activities, is found to be res-ponsible. For one thing there are too many bouts of opera, recorded with pristine clarity but not particularly impressively, performed by Eddy and Foster. Simultaneously, having experimented on his dead wife and turned her into a zombie Borg , he is now busily trying to find a cure for her. She finally leads the zombies in a revolt. Sekely, a talented refugee from the Hungarian and German cinema, never really got much of a chance in Hollywood, but with the aid of superlative camerawork by John Alton made a strikingly stylish job of Hollow Triumph What she finds is a room, totally empty but for a noose and a chair placed ominously beneath it, that she is told made her sister happy in some strange way.

This enigma is clarified by the discovery that her sister Brooks , condemned to death by the devil- worshippers she has betrayed by walking out on the cult, clings to her room and its noose as a kindlier refuge from the inevitable. As Hunter pursues her search through Manhattan studded with marvellous moments - including a premonition of the 83 rank Craven movies in Hollywood where he befriended Charlie Chaplin and Douglas Fairbanks. His Spanish career dates from and yielded a number of highly regarded pictures. Two decades later, Jesus Franco plugged into this sinister, somewhat pathological vein of Hispanic cinema - also treated in La Corona Negra and Carlota - and transformed it into a specific sex-and-sadism subgenre with his Gritos en la Noche Russell is the young girl who exorcizes the evil ghost in fact, the ghost of her mother who died in childbirth and at the same time rids herself of her guilt.

In the UK, however, the censor removed the shots of the ghosts and so the film won much praise from the critics for having the courage to make a ghost film without ghosts! Return of the Ape Man These attempts to transfer a life- force never manage to awaken the wife from her trance, but do succeed in making zombies of the girls. Zucco helps out as a garage proprietor who steers victims into the web. When Lugosi is shot at the end, the zombies return to normal. All of them contained macabre elements, but since the stories were essentially whodunits, anything supernatural was explained away.

A few stock shots of native voodoo ceremonies support the notion, but it all turns out to be the work of a jealous woman Ankers who murders a couple of faculty members in order to incriminate the wife who is in her way. The British remake, Night of the Eagle , is far superior, inextricably interweaving the destructive powers of human jealousy and supernatural evil. Stevenson, for one thing, makes very little of Edinburgh. Lewton, on the other hand, acknowledges that the grisly shudder of body-snatching is indissolubly attached in the imagination to a dark city dominated by a castle looming out of the mists.

Though opening with the sadistic murder of a prison escapee and ending with the murder of the sadistic warder Karloff , the action is less interesting than the historical detail, and suggests that Lewton was angling for a way out of B movies. Much too talkative though the dialogue is good and clumsily directed, it is at its best in marginalia like the death of a boy prisoner at a Vauxhall masque, asphyxiated by the gold paint in which he is costumed for the amusement of a society audience. This entry purports to explain how he got to be a hideous monster when a chemistry lab accident at university splashed acid in his face.

From football-playing hero he turns, predictably enough, to mad killer thirsting for revenge. Hatton, whose last film this was, died in Although the cast all mm in reasonable performances, all the sinister hocus-pocus goes for very little, given leaden direction and a ridiculous pantomime makeup for the werecat: pointy ears, vampire teeth and stubbly whiskers topped off by an opera hat. Libkov s Sherman L. A supernumerary shrunken head turns out to belong, not to the batch brought back by an explorer from South America, but to the murdered explorer.

Although the somewhat over-excited script tends to throw in everything - hypnotism, a voice from the grave, poisoned darts, a rampaging leopard - the film has its moments, notably the eerie sequence among the stuffed animals in a shop belonging to the kindly old taxidermist Donati who owns the leopard and who murdered the explorer because he hunted animals. After successfully reviving a Great Dane which becomes semi-transparent, walks through walls and drinks blood, he experiments on a drowned sailor and his own wife Drake.

They too develop strange habits like walking through glass and also acquire rigid faces. For good measure, the film also has Rey doing some voodoo as a sinister housekeeper, and Best contributes his scared act. Kosleck is a surrealist sculptor driven to suicidal frenzy by a malicious critic Napier. About to throw himself into the river, he sees something crawling out of it. Delighted by the brutish creature who emerges - a notorious killer believed to have drowned - Kosleck hustles him back to his studio to use as a model, and soon discovers that the grateful Creeper is only too willing to snap the spine of anyone who crosses his benefactor.

In contrast to European ghost comedies, which are mostly about the saving of old castles from modernization Fantasmi a Roma, , for example , here the script accepts the demolition of the house for the sake of progress and decrees that the ghosts will have to settle for a flat in a skyscraper like everyone else. Roland, born Luis Antonio Damaso de Alonso in Mexico, had been a Hollywood star since the mid-twenties and continued a noteworthy career well into the sixties. What began as a drift away from science fiction rapidly became a full-scale horror revival.

If the year in which Universal unleashed both Dracula and Frankenstein saw the creation of the horror genre, saw the creation of the modern horror film. The Curse of Frankenstein, El Vampiro and I Was a Teenage Werewolf all released , to which one can add I Vampiri, made in but only released internationally in , each in their different way testified to the renaissance of the horror film. Teenage Werewolf which was followed in by the equally bizarre I Was a Teenage Frankenstein , in its very title highlighted the fact that youth was the major audience for horror films, a fact that all subsequent producers would bear in mind.

Set in Tangier but shot in Spain, the plot concerns a woman Felix who loses her memory after killing her husband who was about to divorce her because of her affair with Mauricio Gassman. Since she put them in the coffm together with the corpse, the murder is discovered but Gassman becomes the main suspect and, in a desperate bid to escape, he is killed. The ending sees the unfortunate adultress sink into madness as she embraces the dead body of the only man she really loved.

The plot is unravelled through numerous flashbacks and punctuated with dream sequences full of hallucinatory images of witches, clutching hands emerging from a grave, the black- clad widow being pursued by a dwarf in a brilliant white cemetery, and the symbolic black crown itself: the formation of ravens as they circle above a corpse. Saslavsky made other films in Europe but none justified the reputation which had preceded him on his arrival from Argentina.

Lopez Silva, F. The plot concerns a young bride Marshall who returns from her honeymoon to a creepy household and finds her husband Osborn is insane. There is also the knowing family doctor Barry and a sinister butler Le Mesurier who kills his revered master before poisoning himself. The movie, poorly directed, offers an unhappy mix of the conventions of melodrama, the-butler-did-it thriller and psycho-horror. The story concerns a cruel medium Powers who, after years of faking seances and mistreating her young helpers, her daughter Alberghetti , and a mute gypsy boy Coleman , begins to feel that the forces of darkness are out to get her and senses fingers gripping her throat to choke her.

The performances on the stage were, by all accounts, impressive, which in film terms means grotesquely over the top. There is no dialogue, only arias and recitative and lots of dramatic music. Cinephiles who like opera would probably prefer to buy a record. Scott is adequate in the dual role, and Henreid is his usual prissily professional self. Fisher returned to the Frankenstein theme of a surgeon who creates a duplicate of his loved one in The Four Sided Triangle Laughton goes enjoyably over-the-top as a 17th-century nobleman madly dispensing tortures and prowling the gothic castle where the rightful owner - his brother Cavanagh , who had the temerity to marry the woman he loved - lies rotting in a dungeon with Karloff as his baleful but sympathetic keeper.

Much better than its reputation suggests, the film is surprisingly imaginauvely directed by Pevney, not noted for horror movies although he did direct the Lon Chaney biopic, Man of a Thousand Faces Burden is the psychic investigator who lays the ghosts and allows the happy couple to Charles Laughton, as embark on their cruise. But the acting and the script, though a little Door. It tells of an archaeologist and his wife who, by pulling a wooden stake out of a dessicated skeleton accidentally revive a witch who has been dead for years.

The witch, played by Mane, is a decidedly healthy-looking young girl and contrasts interestingly with the usual depictions of predatory women. However, Hallstrom, at best a routine director, fails to breathe any real life into the story and as a result the movie is rather their pitiless exhausting lives in inhospitable surroundings which leave their cruel marks on the people who have to endure them. The woman falls under a spell and begins to live a double life: as a wife and as a man-killing reindeer, until in the end her husband kills the reindeer with cold steel.

Except for the scenes involving the local shaman, the movie is underplayed and unwinds with the slow but captivating rhythms of oral literature. The beautiful Kuosmanen, who also co-wrote the script, plays the cursed woman with conviction, endowing her trans-formation scenes with an emotional power rare in films of the period, which gained the film prizes at film festivals in Cannes and Karlovy Vary A second Finnish witch movie, Noita Palaa Elamaan , was made almost simultaneously, but these remain the only two significant F inni sh contributions to the genre to date.

This collection of three short daughter. Lugosi is the mad doctor, Van Hoosen, who dresses murder stories introduced by TV personality Harding is and behaves as a vampire should. The plot has a robot kidnap notable mainly for the Barclay-scripted Thirty Days to Die Mother Riley and pit her against Van Hoosen and the denizens episode in which a playwright Gregg plots his lethal revenge of his old dark house. Immensely popular in the provinces, the on a critic Naismith who gave his play a bad review. Dead girls are found with bells on their wrists; Malden overacting like mad in the Lugosi role works at the Paris zoo, where he has trained a gorilla to react to the tinkle of bells; and the period has been updated to around so that Dupin Forrest can be a Freudian psychologist whose fiancee Medina is pursued by Malden.

The abysmal dialogue is full of psychoanalytical bilge, the murders are repetitive in the extreme the best scene, paradoxically, is one in which the ape attacks a window-display dummy , and the 3-D effects are tamely restricted to the usual hail of hurled knives and clutching paws. Two of the three stories are of particular interest. The result is a fascinaung reflection on the very reality effect of images: an illusion achieved here at the cost of transforming the viewer, Pryse, into a stuffed dummy. The Lord Mountdrago episode, scripted by Dalrymple from a Somerset Maugham story, features Welles and Badel as political antagonists who discover that their d teams affect their opponent.

They proceed to dream each other to death. This tale concerns Marchi Toto , who commits suicide and winds up in hell with Satan Buazzalli and Belfagor Lay , as well as with Cleopatra. Jealous of the love between Toto and Cleopatra, Satan first exiles him to an existentialist bistro, and then continues to persecute him, appearing in the guise of a policeman, a prosecutor and a judge. Back in New York where all of them conveniently live , three more die in similar circumstances until only Long and Thompson are left. At first upset when his actress girlfriend Hughes marries Long, Thompson finds consolation in the beautiful stranger Domergue lurking in the apartment across the way.

Able to control the monster through English, Morris makes a big showbiz thing of predicting its killings, sharing the ill-gotten gains with his partner Conway. Very much a thing of plastic and studio paste, the creature is at least more fun here than when trundled out again with a different head for the science fiction variation Voodoo Woman The original head surfaced as a prop in How to Make a Monster , and the whole creature re-emerged as a male in The Ghost of Dragstrip Hollow The She Creature was remade, abominably and without acknowledgement, by aip-tv as Creature of Destruction , directed by Larry Buchanan.

Garland is a psychotherapist who discovers that a prostitute patient Duncan is the reincarnation of a witch burned at the stake. Fascinated, he contrives to go back with her to the Middle Ages where even though it will mean changing the future she tries to save her past self. Full of knights, beheadings, rampaging witches and Satan waving a pitchfork - all dressed up in cod Shakespearian dialogue - the film has some enterprising special effects witch metamorphozing into cat and nice shafts of black humour the heroine finding herself sharing a coffin with a corpse. If antecedents must be assigned, they would include F.

A sculptor by training, Freda adopted his flamboyantly romantic style at a time when Italian cinema was still struggling with the deadweight of neorealism. In I Vampiri, two decades. Scientists Launer and Lynn experiment on Ritch with a serum intended to cure radiation poisoning, but instead turn him into a werewolf. Despite a competent performance from Ritch, the film ends in usual monster-on- the-loose style. Its only interest is in the very obvious marriage of genres at a time when horror movies were about to come back into favour after the science fiction boom of the early fifties.

Sears p Sam Katzman s Robert E. Kent, James B. John Launer, George M. While the bewildered Knight goes on nocturnal prowls, Murphy and the half-witted gardener Barzell kill a girl Todd and attempt to re-model her as a superior female.

Annoyed when the result is a monster, Murphy decides to try again with Knight because she has spumed his advances. Weighed down with the usual scenes of teenage partying, the film eventually ends with a routine 1 the murders until he is shot on the grave of the man wrongly ancestry: there are no long voyages from Transylvania to hange d for his crimes. At times succeeding in depicting a England since the Castle and the Holmwood residence are typically English capacity for brutality and the repressive within riding distance of each other-a money-saving alteration effects ofthe prevailing social order, the movie loses itself in the of the novel with felicitous thematic consequences, making absurdly contrived plot and endless chases.

The plot has a young scholar Lei encounter a lovely girl Le Di in a temple where he spends the night. She seems determined to seduce him, but gradually he realizes that she is a ghost intent on setting him up to be killed by her evil aunt Dong , who also is a ghost.

Only his moral fortitude saves him from their spectral clutches and finally destroys the persecutory female. The whole is a lovely mood piece mixing romance and horror. Shortly before leaving Taiwan, the prolific director contributed an episode to the omnibus movie Hsi Nou Ai Lueh He later returned to Shaw to become their main Night of the Demon The executive producer, Herman Cohen, later presided over another circus horror, this time starring Joan Crawford, Berserk The silly gimmick was only marginally less tiresome when spoofed in Billy the Kid vs Dracula Night of the Ghouls, which opens with TV prophet Criswell arising from his coffin to warn of monsters who are to be pitied and monsters who are to be despised, is as inept as anything Wood ever made.

A fake medium Duncan , aided by an equally fake spirit Hansen and a huge monster Johnson , goes about his business of conning people into believing he can contact their dead. Accidentally, however, he resusciates some corpses and is buried alive by the ghoulish zombies while the beatnik Vampira gleefully cavorts as apparently a real spirit. The main problem is the script which has difficulty transposing the Christian European vampire myth to Japan, even though there are many bloodsucking creatures in traditional Japanses ghost stories.

Nakagawa had tried his hand at European style horror before, with his Kyuketsuki Ga - in which a vampire turns into a moth instead of a bat - but here he opts for a truly chaotic pot-pourri. Niwako Mihara , the descendant of a year-old Christian family and the wife of an atomic scientist, is kidnapped by a vampire Amachi and taken to his underground castle. Set in British East India company territory in the s, the film has Rolfe as the officer who discovers the Thuggee cult dedicated to robbing and strangling fellow Indians not devoted to Kali-worship.

In the face of the utter indifference of a snobbish fellow officer Cuthbertson , Rolfe resigns and pursues his detection activities, escaping execution twice and ultimately eliminating the local adepts after they have wiped out a rich caravan and the English soldiers guarding it. Fisher takes the opportunity to stage some of his nastiest scenes as the sect mutilates and kills two of its renegade members, including his second cutting out of the tongue scene that year the first one was in the opening sequence of The Mummy.

Whereas other members of the cast play fanatics of one sort or another, she manages to convey the passionate excitement that can accompany the twisted but liberating explosion of revenge after decades of poverty and repression. The story is a variation on H. Lederer captures a tiger and, after some operations, changes it into something resembling a man Carlos , to the dismay of Mrs Girard, played by the improbably opulent Thyssen.

She then gravitates towards Derr but is kidnapped by the monster. Lederer, fresh from the unfortunate The Return of Dracula , easily outplays his fellow performers. One was the chance to revisit the nihilistic tramp of Boudu Same des Eaux and explore the joyous anarchy which comes when the bonds of conventional morality are loosed. The other was to give Barrault a role which would offer full scope to his talents as actor and mime. Prancing, twitching, moving with the animal grace of a dancer, Barrault is magnificent, creating an extraordinary chimera whose intrusion into the Paris streets lends them an unsettling air of menace.

Summoned by a man Coolidge to treat his sick wife Evelyn , Price realizes that she, being deaf-and-dumb and therefore unable to scream, is the perfect subject for his experiments. He indeed finds a tingler - a scaly, scuttling organism which grips the nerves and for once offers a credibly shuddery movie monster - but it escapes and sows screaming panic in the cinema. In America, Roger Corman began his series of adaptations of the works of Edgar Allan Poe with the magnificent House of Usher , while films like Onibaba and Kwaidan both revealed to the West the violent Japanese horror tradition. More significant were the sex-vampire films, first brought to the screen by Jean Rollin in with Le Viol du Vampire. These trends notwithstanding, the decade is best summed up by four film-makers, Alfred Hitchcock, Roman Polanksi, Michael Powell and George Romero, whose work both defined the horror film in the sixties and pointed to the future.

Essentially a misogynistic love story riddled with horror imagery as the level-headed male reveals the successful authoress to be a frightened little girl, the film failed at the box office because it was overshadowed by the equally inane Das Spukschloss im Spessart , released at the same time. A great deal of footage of people wandering through dark forests pads out a badly acted and directed movie which verges on sexploitation. The ghost also Renard's novel. In , however, he only made two to enable him to concentrate on this film - the pivotal work of his career - which summarizes his moral-religious philosophy.

Set in a theological faculty of a university, the plot focuses on two characters, the quiet but indecisive Shiro Amachi and the mephistophelean Tamura world of the living and that of the dead and thus, like the Japanese notion of karma, binding the two inextricably together. There, the moral implications of certain actions were returned to the perpetrator in the shape of ghosts, thereby avoiding the simplistic split between here and a nightmarish hereafter.

Haryasu Kurosawa, the designer of the previous film, also provided the at times abstract setting for Jigoku. Particularly noteworthy are the poetic designs for the shores of the river of death while other effects are primarily achieved through eerie lighting and use of colour filters to bathe isolated bits of action marked off from a black or monochrome background. Ferroni became better known as Calvin Jackson Padget, director of Italian westerns. Carbone plays a gangster who plans to help the loyalist cause after a revolution in a certain Caribbean island.

More of a fantasy than a horror movie perhaps, the film does make darkly minatory use of its dream sequences the mermaid nightmarishly metamorphozing into of scientific experiment, is superior routine. It tells of a black cat, the only witness to the killing of its mistress Lacey by her husband Morell and two servants Jackson and Crawford.

The picture also boasts a good score by Mikis Theodorakis in his pr e-Zorba the Greek days. Ernie Broughton Connor , a proofreader of horror stories, and Syd James become involved in an old-dark-house adventure which decimates the Broughton family. All the horror-thriller cliches are passed in revue: the sinister visitor Pleasance , a mad family living in a place called Blackshaw Towers on the Yorkshire Moors, a club-footed butler Gough , a masked killer and plenty of thunderstorms and fog.

With the exception of the brief guest appearance of Adam Faith, Jackson - a veteran from the British documentary school - skilfully keeps the movie finely balanced between crazy comedy and horror with witty camera angles and judicious cutting. Song is arrested but on his release, his face is badly scarred in an acid attack by an angry official. Unable to act and reluctant to see his lover again.

Song secludes himself in the disused wing of an old theatre and spreads the news that he has died. People believe him to be a ghost, but years later he is befriended by a young actor whom he helps and uses as a messenger to contact Li again. Song finally avenges himself on the official who maimed him but he is drowned during the struggle. They made a number of martial arts films which proved to be unsuccessful and the company failed. Under the influence of cumulative shocks, she eventually realizes that the handsome man is Caligari, that she is suffering from sexual repression, and that she is under treatment in a mental home.

The result is perversely fascinating. There, haunted by strange hallucinations involving a man with a dead face Harvey , feeling cut off from the world and thought crazy by the people she meets, she feels drawn to a derelict amusement park where the man of her hallucination escorts her into a dance of the dead in the ballroom. Meanwhile, police back at the scene of the accident find her corpse. The film is a real curiosity with strikingly used locations, in particular the derelict amusement park isolated among mudflats, its machinery rusting and its vast ballroom still hung with dusty streamers.

This format is only feasible if carried by an established comedy team with its own following and able to play with the disjointed gags and genre conventions and is best suited to television, as shown by the success of The Munsters teleseries. He, his wife Anders and a couple of friends are subjected to a flurry of mysterious happenings which culminate in the discovery of a seemingly decapitated body. These turn out to have been perpetrated by a family of freaks, hiding in the dungeons and resorting to old tricks in a desperate attempt to avoid being thrown out of their home following the sudden death of the showman.

Although the title is borrowed from a Poe poem, the script is adapted from H. Surprised by the hostility which greets his arrival and by the strangely deformed people to be seen in the village. There is real menace, too, in a scene where the mutants converge on Price and Paget in the village square in an attempt to frighten them away.
