Like these works, they are intensely confessional and internally probing.
Hang also affords us unique opportunities for several reasons. First, he wrote in a highly censored culture and thus sought creative idioms and modes of expression to circumvent authorities. His tactful and imaginative approach has only grown more urgent as online censorship and the fictional worlds of both Brave New World and have become realities.
Second, Hang consistently questions the boundaries both between private and public life and between personal reflection and artistic practice. His project suggests poetry as live performance and life as poetry. The desire for connection, enchantment, and intimacy that circulates in his work, and the ubiquitous search in modern life for ways to combat alienation, make translating Hang important. The most important impetus for this project, however, is that we both have friends, family, and professors from whom we have learned all we know and to whom we are greatly indebted.
We hope they will enjoy reading these translations. His wordplay, for example, often renders direct translation difficult.
In Mandarin, a number of possible readings quickly emerge. Regardless, the co-temporality of sleep and sex clearly precludes the success of either.

Underlying the project is an attempt to create a communal space where what John Dewey called Art as Experience becomes possible. The task is to restore continuity between the refined and intensified forms of experience that are works of art and the everyday events, doings, and sufferings that are universally recognized to constitute experience.
Viewing artwork, and interacting with a blog itself, thus becomes akin to joining, and helping to sustain, a community. Indeed, Hang himself had a similar desire to restore continuity between art and life and to incorporate both political and personal struggles into his work. We hope these translations can, in small part, offer one of the many variations into which his art can germinate. Poetry Near You. Academy of American Poets. National Poetry Month.
